Talking with the man, Gavin Noble, about triathlon, secrets and life in general

When I was in Stellenbosch earlier this year I drank a lot of coffee.
I also ate a lot – my favorite place was Spur because they had a burger and buffet for 45 rand – u can’t beat that!
Around the cafes and the Spur in Stellenbosch I would always find Gavin Noble.
We were both very bored with our lives and do both enjoy a bit of company when drinking our coffee and eating out burger so we got talking.
Turned out Gavin is a hard man..I think the hardest working guy I have been around in the sport. He would laugh when I told how my training buddies and I do it here in Copenhagen.
His attitude (and some would argue looks also) reminds me of the one Tom Cruise (worlds best actor) has in Far and Away. Anyone who will run 3 times a day and still swim and bike knows a thing or two about dedication.
It might have been stupid but it was beautiful to watch.
Gavin is also a very interesting guy who has much more to teach everyone than a simple interview on a danish blog can offer but I decided to give it a go.
Having spend time with you in Stellenbosch I noticed you like your coffee.
How many cups a day would you say you drink and how do you like the coffee..straight from can or latte or what do you prefer?
My coffee habit is directly proportional to what I did the day before and what I have to do today . . . or sometimes a coffee is a social outing and therefore I am having one for no other reason than ‘just because’ – does that make sense ?
Maybe we could have coffee and discuss its merits ?
We could then have another one because we have some intervals on the bike to do.
One because it helps me block out the pain. Or one because it helps me reload my muscles with glycogen after the ride – in that case we would need to also have some porridge or a muffin.
The mertis of Porridge and muffins is a totally different ball game – one that I could debate with you over coffee.
Is that you what keeps you so fit? Or do you have some scerets..magic workouts, tips that you would like to enlighten us with..if you feel like it please don’t stop at triathlon..teach us about life.
I went off coffee for a while recently. It made me realise how actually tired I was.
I rested and then became fitter.
I don’t enjoy resting though. I get bored. I also don’t enjoy beetroot juice, core stability or cleaning my bike . . . but i try.
What is your favorite YouTube video?
I am not sure – Irish triathlete Bryan Keane posted one last year after an Irish Camp in St Moritz – I called that camp “best camp ever”.
There is also something about Lady Gaga videos that interests and fascinates me . . . I am not sure why. I am not afraid to admit it, I am Gaga fan.
I know you met a lot of smart people in your life..if you were to name one person that would be the biggest genius who would that be ?
I do know a lot of smart people – or maybe it’s more a case of – I know a lot of people who are smarter than I am !!
Stellenbosch Legend Ernie Gruhn is one of them that is for sure.
What did this person teach you? Can you share a bit of his wisdom?
He taught me about; ’sand paper sessions’, ‘grinding away’ and the importance of stimulus management.
You have to keep adding to the account rather so that you can enjoy the interest dividend.
Ok..let’s move a bit away from sports into the real world. How do you feel about the man controlling everything ?
Man made the cars to take us over the road.
Man made the electric light to take us out of the dark.
Man made the coffee grinder.
Man made the Specialized sl3.
And after Man made everything he can, man makes money to buy from other men. But at the end of the day it would be nothing without a women or a girl . . . supposedly.
World cup in South Africa is comming up. Who will do better. Denmark or Ireland?
Here is my advice for the World Cup – watch it on TV.
Keep up with Gavin on this blog where he offers training tips, more insight to the secrets of life and other usefull advice and information.
